Bite of Education
Saturday, April 20, 2024
9am-1pm

Othello-UW Commons, Seattle

Imagine...

...walking into a space abuzz with educators. They’re all talking with each other about classroom and school-based practices they care about. You walk from one table to another collecting exciting ideas you can use when you get back to school on Monday. It’s not the PD we’re used to! It’s the “Bite of Education.”

What is the Bite of Education?

The Bite of Education is a free one-day festival showcasing inspiring lessons, practices and ideas that educators bring into their classrooms and schools. It is an event created by and for educators who are excited to sample what their colleagues do and to connect with a broader community. Think of it like the Bite of Seattle, only with bites of pedagogy instead of food!

Participants will move freely through the festival, chatting with educators at the different tables, engaging in brief presentations of their “bites,” and collecting handouts that summarize each bite. There will also be a scheduled workshop and presentation by keynote speaker Bawaajigekwe Boulley. Free clock hours are provided by Washington Ethnic Studies Now.

Keynote Speaker Bawaajigekwe Boulley

We are excited to announce that Bawaajigekwe Boulley will be the keynote (or shall we say "quiche-note") speaker at the Bite! Here is a little more about her.

Bawaajigekwe is a citizen of the Ojibwe Nation and a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. She is the daughter of Steve and Deborah Boulley. Her mother is a retired reading specialist, and her father is a judge.

Bawaajigekwe resides in Olympia, Washington with her daughter, Animikiikwe, who will graduate high school this spring. Her daughter is her greatest teacher in life and plans to continue the family legacy of becoming a teacher.

As an educator, Bawaajigekwe specializes in Indigenous Pedagogy and Worldview and empowers colleagues to function in community. She believes it is not only what we do, it is how we do it.

Bawaajigekwe is currently the BEST Program Supervisor at OSPI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay to register?
No! Registration for the Bite of Education is free!

I can’t stay for the whole 9am-1pm. Should I still come?

Yes! We’d like to mimic a festival-like atmosphere where people can come and go. Check out the event schedule if you’d like to make it to something in particular.

Do I get clock hours for my attendance?

Yes! You can earn clock hours for the time you attend (up to 4 hours). Thank you to Washington Ethnic Studies Now (WAESN) for providing free clock hours to participants!

What should I bring?

There's nothing specific to bring! Each attendee will receive a folder for you to store handouts. If you are someone who likes to take notes, a notebook and pen might be nice to have :).

Can I bring my kids?
Yes! Feel free to bring your little ones! While we don’t have kid-specific activities, they are more than welcome to join as you make your way through the tables :). The Othello Playground is located a block away, so you and the kids can head over there afterwards!

Will there be food?

There will be some snacks to munch on, but lunch is not provided. Thank you to Sea Wolf Bakery and Christine Young for gifting their delicious pastries. Also thank you to personal contributions to our snack funds. While lunch is not provided, we’ll provide a list of nearby local restaurants for you to head to after!

Where is the event located?

The Bite of Education will be at the Othello-UW Commons: 4200 S Othello St, Seattle, WA 98118.

What is transportation and parking like?

Taking the Link Light Rail would be a great option! The Othello-UW Commons is located across the street from the Othello Link Light Rail Station. There is also free street parking in the neighborhood streets, about a 5-10 minute walk to the Othello-UW Commons.

Can you tell me about the accessibility of space?

The Othello-UW Commons is located on the street level with no entrance steps. The bathrooms are wheelchair accessible. There are no stairs to the restroom. One of the bathrooms is for females and the other is an all-gender single room.

Is it too late to sign up to present?

No, we’re still welcoming presenters to share a bite-sized educational practice! Unlike traditional conferences in which presenters have a dedicated time slot to present in front of an audience, presenters here will each have a table in which they offer pedagogical “bites” to participants who will roam and sample your “bite.”  Think of it as having a booth at a festival. We’re hoping for lots of small, bite-sized ideas that require very low-lift preparation for presenters. If you’re interested in presenting, simply email contact@beampedagogy.com with the subject line "Interested in presenting!" and we'll be in touch with you!

Have a bite-sized practice you'd like to share?

We are still welcoming presenters to share a bite-sized educational practice! As a presenter, you would have a table in which you share one of your educational practices with participants. Don't worry, you'd still have plenty of time to visit other tables and participate in Bite events! We’re looking for presenters on topics such as…

  • Lesson and unit ideas

  • Community building

  • Rituals and routines

  • Maintaining educator wellness

  • Connecting with students, families, and communities

  • Infusing joy into learning

  • Repairing after harm

  • More!

Please email us at contact@beampedagogy.com with subject line "Interested in presenting!" and we'll be in touch with you about presenting.
